I relax in the company of individuals who are competent yet humble. I like to catch myself doing or saying something ridiculous and then laugh my head off. I enjoy my church and being involved.

      Michael,

      Yeah, no kidding, but I feel just like this eagle. Some of my past capabilities are going away, but I can feel them morphing, changing, into mature new abilities for my future. It is angering, frustrating, depressing, and encouraging all at once. I have to increasingly work hard at using those abilities that once came natural, and in the mean time, it is unsettling not knowing how to use the new abilities that are now taking shape – leaving me in a sort of limbo. I don’t know exactly where all this is headed, but I do know that the years ahead will be very different from my past.

      Yes, and a true testament to the will to live. I was instantly moved when I discovered this about eagles, especially becuase we humans go through similar transformations, except internally.

    Hey, Todd I love your blog. It’s the greatest. The pictures of the eagles brings to my mind the scripture, Isaiah 40:31. The part where it says, “………we shall mount up with wings as an eagle, run and not grow weary, walk and not faint.” God is taking me out of my comfort zone daily. Yes, it’s a bit scary, but I’m up for the challenge. Living can only be accomplished in Christ.

      Absolutely true. That same verse was running through my mind as I was putting this post together. It is so great that God allows us to understand ourselves by giving us scriptural examples of his creation. That is so cool!

    Wow! I didn’t know about this (well, I don’t know about a lot of wonderful things, so I shouldn’t be surprised.)

    I think that we humans have all the more reason to go on – especially because we know that when we are forty, we still have thirty more years left in us. At forty, we might not have the same physical strength that we had when we were twenty; but we have a lot more sense than we had then – and so, at forty, we know that we can control the way the next thirty years turn out for us.

    In some ways, forty is better than twenties or even thirties – you have wisdom, you’ve learned to appreciate the value of time, and you’ve understood how the world works and why – so…if you want (and that’s the key) you could do things that you never thought of doing before…and do them well.

    I love to use the eagle for illustrations in motivation talks. We can learn an amazing number of lessons from the eagle but this is one I’ve never come across before.
    With hindsight (I have many more years piled up than you do) I can see times when this happened in my life and I would have to say that the end result was worth it. So . . . keep going. Welcome change but use it to advantage.

        I just googled “lifecycle of the eagle” and found an article that debunks this “eagle rebirth”, calling it myth. Even so, this “myth” reminds me of starting over in our forties.

        I never checked it myself, but I had a feeling it was one of those urban legends. I find a LOT of Christian stories floating around out there are pure fiction. No matter how good it sounds, if it is not true, it is not true. **sigh**
