I love truth and its facts. I love thought-provoking conversations that give both the other person and me a better understanding of a particular topic. I love to find answers to life-long questions; answers that let me see things for what they are instead of what they seem to be. I truly enjoy being in the midst of a group of people where all individuals are joining in, where everybody is enjoying the company of each other. I relax in the company of individuals who are competent yet humble. I like to catch myself doing or saying something ridiculous and then laugh my head off. I enjoy my church and being involved.

    And I’m grateful for the capacity each of us has to understand and discern truth for ourselves. A good question is, with all the lies surrounding us, what’s the best way to know what is true and what is not? How do we know when we are being deceived when the adversary can appear as an angel of light? Do we accept things just because they are long-standing traditions or because they are written? If we were confronted with something new, claiming to be truth, what is our process for testing it? I’d be interested to read this blog’s readers approaches to “truth detection”!

      Michael, I realize this is not exactly the answer you are looking for, but this was my first real conscious grasp of truth.  I wrote this in 2007.

    I had to think about the noun “non-contradiction” for a while, Todd. Only when I turned it around and thought the opposite, “Lies are the source of all contradiction,” did it become clear. A lie is abrasive, antagonistic to truth. Lies can range from evading truth to meeting it with violent force. Truth needs to be defended sometimes not because lies can destroy it, but because we gain experience and stronger faith in its defense. We show the godlike aspects of our character in defense of truth. By taking the side of that which cannot be defeated, our confidence grows in victory. Truth itself is not belligerent. It is the truth, constantly attacked but never scarred by any assaults from untruth. It is truly the source of all non-contradiction.

      Yes, good breakdown. That is how I proved to myself the Bible’s validity – as well as any other thoughts or concepts. Sooner or later, if something is not true, it will either contradict itself or reality will do the job instead.

      Essentially, this is what I was referring to in the Truth Behind Reality post, “A Response to Love Told”. The last sentence within the elaboration says, “Love is the one thing that whether violated, withheld or truly given, gives us truth for understanding it.” All good things are the offspring of truth, and because truth never contradicts itself, neither does any good thing, including love. Good is never self-centered at the expense of others – it is always open and transformative – and in the act of receiving it or giving it, truth overpowers contradiction.
